THE POLITICAL LANDSCAPE OF BRITAIN
Politics of today
UKIP - the UK's independent party
BNP - British National Party
The Labour Party
Respect
Conservative party (Theresa May)
- in control of the exit of the European Union (Brexit)
- since the resignation of David Cameron, the party has moved to the right, as MP's moved to May's cabinet
- this party is made up of local associates, keeping the traditional approach to politics
- in May's first speech she made it clear that the conservative party were for 'one nation', looking after the 'ordinary people' and not just the rich - this could have easily been David Cameron making this same speech
E.g. This headline is n favour of the Conservative party, using the traditional 'YOUR COUNTRY NEEDS YOU', helping to present the party as traditional in their views.
UKIP - the UK's independent party
- a sovereignist party wanting to leave the EU
- does well with voters who have lost faith in the failures of the major parties
- xenophobic approach to the EU
E.g. Here this simple headline gives the reader all the information they need, though clearly favouring the outcome - hence supporting the audiences views.
BNP - British National Party
- extreme right-wing party
- nationalist and xenophobic views
- no members of parliament
The Liberal Democrats Party
- mixture of social conservatives and social democrats
- the most pro-European out of all the major parties
- in recent voting, the popularity has increased again after he dip in votes when they collaborated with the conservative party in 2015
The Green Party
- promotion of environmental issues
- more middle-class targeted, with on seat in parliament sine 2010
E.g. Here this is a very effective headline, backing the Green Party. Their whole domineer is about placing major issues over 'squabbling politicians'.
The Labour Party
- left-wing politics of Britain, with Jeremy Corbin as the newest leader (the most left-wing leader the party has ever had)
- supported and funded by the British Trade unions
- socialist values
- in favour of remaining in the EU
E.g. Here this headline from the Times, takes the opposite approach to the prior headlines, placing their opposing party in a negative image, making themselves look above them.
Respect
- party of the populist left-wing Labour party dissident, George Galloway
The Communist Party
- very marginal, with only ever having two elected MP's
