DANCE MUSIC VIDEOS TEXTUAL ANALYSIS

E.g. Red Lights - Tiesto

E.g. Nobody To Love - Sigma

In both of these videos, it shows a very clear representation of the age group which are typically into dance music This is shown through the use of age specified models/actors in the videos, all appearing to be in their early twenties. Those shown in the videos are predominantly female, however I do not feel that this is linking to the fact that the artists fan bases are mainly of this gender. From this it is apparent that the videos have tried to target both genders, however, personally I feel that the use of the male gaze has overtaken the empowerment of women which was supposedly targeted at the females watching these videos.
The male gaze is very prominent within both of these videos, with low angle camera shots lingering on women's bodies instead of the overall scene. Due to this, both videos are almost narrowing their audience, by both assuming the sexuality of the audience as well as losing the before empowering approach of the freedom and ability to travel independently as women, to the overriding theme of dehumanisation - making it appear that women are sexual objects and nothing more.

The lighthearted and carefree tone which has been created in these dance music videos links to the summery theme conveyed. Both show scenes of beaches and American towns, with the shots edited so that the warm weather and the sun is present in the background. This, again links to the typical time frame in which dance music tracks are often released, creating an image which the audience can possibly relate their own summer experiences to. However in these two videos, especially focusing on Tiesto's 'Red Lights', these ideas of summer experiences are sensentionalised, using hyperbole to make them more appealing.
In both of these music videos, media language techniques have been used to enhance aspects of the videos which the producers feel will appeal to their audience. For instance in Tiesto's 'Red Lights' video the camera angle drops to waist height when following one of the female actors out of the dinner, here making her body the focus of the shot. The idea that this reflects the interest of the audience, again linking to the idea of the prominent use of the Male Gaze Theory.

Comparison

E.g.

This is another example of a dance music video, however within this example the themes are shown in a more creative way though also losing the aspect of using a narrative storyline.

  1. Excellent analysis, try to focus on how the dance music genre represents itself. For example; both music videos appear to promote similar themes. You've made the link to 'summer' why do you think this is the case?
What ideas other than freedom appear prevalent?
