  • conforms to the stereo types that; she struggles as a single mother, despises her husband who left her, worries about her son.
  • Upset, emotional, worried, panicked. 
  • Reports to the police that her son is missing. 
Jim Hopper 

  • Major character
  • Conforms to the stern types that; men are messy, men are lazy, depressed due to the death of his daughter. 
  • Grumpy, Lazy, Layback, chilled 
  • Leading the search for Will Byers, sub plot of his daughter dying 

Mike Wheeler 

  • Major character 
  • Conforms to the stereotypes of: childhood, youth, innocence, boyhood
  • Naive, determined to find his friend, immature
  • One of wills best friend so goes in search of him, also finds eleven in the woods. Sub plots of his family life at home. 


Dustin Henderson 

  • Major character 
  • Conforms to the stereo types of: childhood, youth, innocence, boyhood
  • Naive, determined to find his friend, immature
  • one of wills best friends so goes in search of him and finds eleven in the woods. Is the last person to see will before he was taken after racing him home. 


Lucas Sinclair

  • Major Character 
  • Conforms to the stereo types of: childhood, youth, innocence, boyhood
  • Naive, determined to find his friend, immature
  • one of wills best friends so goes in search of him and finds eleven in the woods. Organises to search fro will over the walkie-talkie with Mike. 


Will Byers

  • does not conform to many stereo types of young girls just, scared and naive
  • Sacred, deadly 



Johnathan Byers

Nancy Wheeler


Steve Harrington 

  • major character
  • stereotypical teenage boy 
  • interested in girls, friends, clothes and not so bothered about his education
  • he is part of a romantic sub-plot with Nancy which gets him involved with her brothers bigger problems with Will

Barbra Holland 

  • minor character 
  • stereotypical teenage girl though also 'geeky' at school
  • well-looked after (good upbringing & friends are the same)
  • she initially poses as a disruption to Steve and Nancy's romance as she doesn't agree with Steve's friendship group
  • becomes a forgotten character when she gets trapped in 'the upside down' unlike Will who is part of the major narrative 

Benny Hammond

  • minor character 
  • typical over-weight dinner owner 
  • caring nature as he wants to help Eleven when she is stealing food from him 
  • gets shot very early on so doesn't contribute much to the narrative

Mr Clarke

  • minor character 
  • a typically enthusiastic science teacher at a Middle School 
  • geeky in his ways 
  • aids the discoveries of the boys (radio communication machine) which later aid the narrative as this is used to contact 'the upside down'

Connie Frazer

  • minor character 
  • ruthless in her ways (killed Benny Hammond) to get to Eleven
  • she helps to show the seriousness of the situation to the audience, as she pretends to be a social worker to scam the dinner owner, and also ends up killing him 

The Scientists 

  • minor characters 
  • typically dressed (white coats) 
  • stereotypically have large responsibilities without any knowledge of what they have done/how to fix it 
  • secretive and serious 
  • they have created the disruption to the narrative (creating a gate) and so have played a major part in the story line though don't appear as major characters 

Ted Wheeler

  • minor character
  • stereotypical man of the house - 'listen to your mother' & fixing the TV
  • doesn't have a strong relationship with his own children
  • puts pressure on wife to deal with situations, giving little input (doesn't notice when family are unhappy)

Karen Wheeler 

  • minor character 
  • Stereotypical housewife (takes charge in situations such as dinner and arguments with her children)
  • responsible adult figure 
  • overlook the seriousness of Will's disappearance which forces the boys to go looking unaided
