HOW THE 'MALE GAZE' IS USED IN KHALID'S MUSIC VIDEO 'LOCATION'
In Khalid's music video for his song 'Location', the 'Male Gaze' theory is used considerably throughout the video; making the females shown, almost as a goal for the men.
Throughout the video the singer glances at the camera, creating almost a connection with the audience, though a different connection depending on the gender of the audience. For a male audience, Khalid is shown in a position with a female which would be desirable for a heterosexual male. This is a common trait in videos containing the theory - presuming the sexuality of the audience, and forcing the audience to view the vides through the eyes of a heterosexual male. Though for a female audience, the singer presents himself as desirable for them directly. A female viewing this video begins to compare themselves to the girls shown, making Khalid the goal.
As the video goes on, it becomes more female orientated and so aimed at the heterosexual male. The scene changes to a party, where the lighting is low. A point-of-view shot is used, following the specific girl through dimly lit rooms at a party. This point of view is of the singer - representing the male gender, making the female the goal or aim. The low lighting also shows how the 'Male Gaze' theory is used, as this creates shadows, showcasing the curves of the girls body. Furthermore this is presented as being desirable for a male, presuming the sexuality of the audience.
The clothing used in the video also adds to the use of the theory within the video; any girls which are shown are dressed in very little clothing, automatically making them appear in a provocative way. The stereotype of young females at a party is used in this video, showing girls dancing in a provocative way in skimpy clothing. I don't personally feel like this is necessary in the video as the idea of a party can be shown just as well without girls dancing provocatively.
Even though the 'Male Gaze' is used to present the females in the video in their negative stereotype of provocative, they still are shown to have the power and control in the video over the males, like Khalid. Throughout the music video, the girl is the goal, and so she is given the power over the males even though she there for the purpose of them.
